It's almost June. I didn't think we would be average offensively after 2 months. Albert and Josh are a complete "Fail", Trout doesn't look like he did last year. Didn't think 2 months in I would want Callopso at the plate over every player on the team except Trumbo and sometimes Kendrick/Trout. I didn't sign up for an average offense, I was thinking along the line of great, explosive, near he top. Your right, the pitching is horrible, who could disagree. Defense sucks too! Good times!

I've watched Roth pitch the last three years during the college world series. His demeanor, maturity and ability to mess with the hitters impressed me to a point I found myself cheering USC on even over my California teams. Your article is very detailed and really captures the heart of Roth, when I found out he was picked by the Angel's I was thrilled, as the stadium is 20 minutes from my home. His time up was mixed, during some of his rougher outing, he lost some confidence; looked to me like he was pushing the ball to the plate vs. using his body mechanics. Roth will prevail..... only 23, he'll get his rhythm back, it was a unbelievable stressful time to be brought up to the active roster, even then he showed maturity....

The consolation to all this is that the Angels have been the consensus "offseason champs" the past two years.

Seriously, though, it's simultaneously enjoyable but frustrating to see Angel Nation finally coming around to the realization that most of us were well aware of 18 months ago.

You probably already know and understand this, but no one outside of Anaheim will have the slightest bit of sympathy for Angels fans as their team continues to slide further and further into irrelevance and possibly face another 6-8 years of futility. Your owner has thrown around millions of dollars like they were $5 poker chips trying to "make a statement" to the rest of baseball and "show up" all the other owners. Well over 90% of the Angel fanbase the past two preseasons engaged in non-stop chest-thumping about how their team was "elite" and a definitive WS contender (btw, where's Paris been? haven't seen hide nor hair of him in weeks). Angels fans with all that pent up hubris mouthed off and denigrated division rivals like Texas and Oakland while making their pre-emptive declarations of greatness. They smeared and denigrated the Cardinals fanbase as being "butt-hurt," "bitter," etc. over Pujols. But it's clear now more than ever that this franchise and its fans are the ones wallowing in ignorance and incompetence. This organization has become the most shameful and despised in all of baseball.

As the saying goes, you reap what you sow. Oh, by the way, you don't have just 8.7 years of Pujols. You have closer to 18.7 when you consider the "personal services" portion of his contract. I sincerely hope you enjoy every last bit of him, and I do hope that after paying him a quarter billion dollars after a decade of failure that you can smile and just remember how butt-hurt and bitter the Cardinals and all those other teams were to have missed out on signing him back in the 2011/12 offseason.

"I hate this Angel team" - if you look at the offense's numbers, they are average and not horribly dreadful as you say. The pitching numbers (starters and bullpen) they are horribly dreadful. Yes it would help if the offense was a little better, but the pitching needs major improvements.

"Six weeks ago thought the Angels were going to be one of the best teams in baseball this season."

- Absolutely mind boggling statement....and really gets to the heart of all the problems surrounding this team. It's like a guy playing blackjack and complaining about the bad cards he's dealt. It's not the cards...it's the fact that he's playing blackjack. When the team is ready to win the right way - through hard work, scouting, drafting, not signing the big bats, keeping draft picks...we might see different results.

Fair and accurate, well said. Still waiting for an advanced pitching statistic based on a pitchers confidence or fear level. How much better would this staff be if the horribly-dreadful offense which supports it was just league average? Can't be easy knowing one bad inning and you done. Maybe we can call it "MOSBBP" "My Offense Sucks Better Be Perfect".

ralphie and Richard, I heartily agree. I've been an Angel fan since the 60's and it is very discouraging to see the direction the front office has taken. I don't live in southern California any longer, so I don't hear any rumors or read editorials but I've been sickened by so many of the moves the past two years. Let Torii go? Haren? Pick up Hamilton and Blanton? Wow. What part does Arte play in this direction? Is it all DiPoto, or is the owner telling him what to do? I'm hugely disappointed. I think Scioscia could do wonders with a bunch of grinders like Eckstein, Erstad and Kennedy... We need to turn the direction of the franchise around, and not by firing Scioscia...

You're right that teams shouldn't rely on free agent signings to build their teams, but I don't see any issue with signing the "right" mega free agent to a long-term deal if that player truly puts you over the top.

Example: The Yankees signing CC Sabathia prior to the 2009 season gave them a front-of-the-rotation starter that helped catapult them to a World Series.

Generally, long-term contracts fail if you look at them in a vacuum. The ones that work are the ones that allow a good team to be a great team, even if it's just for a short time.

richard:

Here-Here!

Well put. I'm no Scioscia apologist, although I think he brings a lot more to the table than he takes off. I just wish some of the commenters on this site would grab hold of reality and look around at what the successful teams in MLB are doing....hint: it's different that what the Angels are doing.

Find the next Hamilton, Pujols, etc. etc...don't sign them once they've already maxed out their best years....
