Stange, 27, grew up in Orange, just a few miles away from the Big A. He had a cup of coffee with the Diamondbacks in 2010, but he’s struggled in various Triple-A stints over the past four seasons.
This season, Stange has a 4.00 ERA over 54 innings in Triple-A with the Angels and San Diego Padres. He’s struck out 59 batters and walked 29. Stange takes the bullpen spot that opened up when the Halos traded Scott Downs to the Atlanta Braves this morning.
Hawpe hadn’t played too often with the big league club. After mashing at Triple-A Salt Lake, Hawpe reached base 10 times in 32 plate appearances for the Halos. It appears that the Major Leagues are in fact more difficult than the minor leagues.
Hawpe has struggled in the show since leaving the confines of Coors Field in Colorado. He reached base at a .380 clip over four consecutive seasons before the Rockies released him in 2010.
